Fishing for Chickens?

While Jacqui and Porter are in Newfoundland, I've made a quick trip up to Alaska to visit Dad. Upon arriving Thursday evening, Dad informed me that the weather was perfect to head offshore out of Homer for a Friday halibut trip. Who needs sleep, let's go!

The small halibut in the video was about the average size we caught. We had to pick through these 'chickens' until we were able to land four 10-15lbers...the largest of our trip. Usually a few 40-60 lbers are caught, but we couldn't find a bigger fish. That's just fine with me. The chicken's taste better. We also tangled with a few skates, irish lords, starry flounder, and the high light of the trip - a nice Pacific cod!

Hopefully the weather will lay down again sometime next week for another trip. We're hoping to travel a bit farther in hopes of finding some rockfish, ling cod, and larger halibut.

Until then, we'll take advantage of the epic sockeye run that's going on, take a hike or two to find some grayling, and maybe make a float trip down the Kenai River.
