Beach Boy

We had some beautiful weather on the coast today, so we took full advantage of it with a trip to the beach. Here are some shots of Porter playing in the sand.

A common question we receive is "Is he on solids yet?" Most everyone is surprised to hear that we're not doing the pureed foods, and instead are jumping right into table foods. This is commonly called 'baby-led weaning/feeding." As described on the Nourished Kitchen blog "With baby-led weaning, children skip the mashes and purees, cereals and classic baby foods and start directly on the foods their parents consume – enjoying the full range of textures, flavors and nuances of food from the very beginning." Now I'm not saying that feeding cereals and mashed foods to your youngster is bad or wrong. It just seems to me that there are a lot of advantages to using the baby-led approach - check out the top ten benefits here (I like the last one the best!). And we really think Porter enjoys it! He has tried the following foods: banana, apple, mango, avocado, carrot, celery, rutabaga, broccoli, chicken, whole wheat toast, and sweet potato. He loves to reach out for whatever food we're eating, and has a BIG smile when we give it to him. For the most part he just holds it or pushes it around on his feeding tray, but sometimes he gets bold and puts it in his mouth. This usually happens after we show him how to do it - he loves to copy his Dad! He also likes to put food into our mouths. Check out the following experience with broccoli (also showcasing his tongue-clicking):

We know that one day soon he'll get a taste of something and start shoving things into his chomper with wild abandon. We will welcome that day with open arms. Until then, he's getting everything he needs from breastmilk, in addition to learning to love his fruits and vegetables, just like his Mom and Dad.

A parting video of our little Russian dancer in the jumperoo listening to CarTalk (he loves those guys!):

  1. Good idea about the weaning. We kinda did the same thing. We even let her use a real spoon! Imagine that! LOL....

We are still in our heavy winter boots and parkas up here. Summer will be here soon, only another 3 months away:(
