Alaskan Visitor

Usually summer time is reserved for field work in far off places and trips to Newfoundland and/or Alaska to visit family. Obviously, you know about the Newfoundland connection....but Alaska? Grandpa Degan moved up to the Last Frontier in the late 90's and has 'roughed' it up there ever since. Brian was quite proud of the fact he was able to visit him pretty much every summer in-between work trips. But with family dynamics changing, time hasn't allowed a visit up north the past two summers.

So instead of us going north, Grandpa Degan has come South to meet Porter for the first time.

Uncle Mark, Aunt Dana, and Lana showed up later on Friday evening, and we discussed weekend plans...
  • Dove hunt Down East at Open Grounds Farms
  • Grill out said doves at the Mitchell Estate, South Texas style
  • Watch football on Sunday
We didn't take as many photos as we had hoped...but that is usually a good sign that the weekend plans came to fruition, and we had a great time.

The dove hunt gave everyone ample opportunities to shoot a limit. Though like most dove hunts, you shoot AT a hellava lot more doves than you bag. We did kill a few birds, which made for the perfect amount to grill back at the Mitchell house. All the birds where plucked, cleaned, stuffed with jalapeno, then wrapped in bacon....South Texas style. Nothing signifies the coming of Fall more than a good get together with family and friends centered around a meal of doves. Yum.

Sunday morning found us gathered in the living room passing Porter around during the opening of the NFL season...which started with a resounding thud for Carolina Panther fans. That didn't deter from us enjoying the day.

So the weekend was a success, and Porter got to meet one more Grandparent, Grandpa Degan...only two more Grandparents to go! That will come in October, when Ed and Ada Jenkins head South for their first international travel. See you soon!
